Sustainable corporate strategy

Strategic focus of RAG

The strategic focus of RAG Austria AG is on the business area of energy storage of gaseous energy sources for energy supply security and on the further development of sustainable gas technologies of the future. We are convinced that the energy supply of the future must be low-emission, technology-neutral and cross-sectoral connected. As a responsible company, RAG is making an active contribution to this and is using its technological expertise, innovative strength and many years of experience to build a sustainable energy system.

Forward-looking strategy

RAG pursues a forward-looking strategy that includes the transition from fossil fuel mining to sustainable energy and material mining.

This envolves the

  • sustainable use of existing reservoirs in Upper Austria and Salzburg as energy storage facilities,
  • production and storage of hydrogen,
  • local production of crude oil and natural gas for non-energy use and domestic value added with low emissions and high standards,
  • geothermal use for energy generation

This further development not only enables diversification of the business model, but also creates growth potential in the changing energy market.

Transformation through innovation

A key strategic goal is to support the energy transition by storing intermittent wind and solar power and converting it into storable gas using power-to-gas technology. This enables seasonal transfer and ensures a demand-oriented energy supply.

With the early but risk-conscious restructuring of its storage business towards a cross-sector, climate-neutral energy supply, RAG is positioning itself as a relevant player in the European energy landscape.

RAG is investing specifically in the development of storage technologies and processes such as methane electrolysis, which enable the CO₂-free use of globally available methane reserves for the production of hydrogen (H2) and carbon (C) in solid form (black carbon powder) for further industrial use. These technologies for decarbonising natural gas use have high scaling potential far beyond Austria and the European Union.

Responsible strategy

The sustainability strategy is firmly integrated into RAG's corporate strategy. It forms the framework for our measures in the areas of the environment, social affairs and responsible corporate governance.

Our employees are actively shaping the future of energy. We create the conditions for an attractive, safe and healthy working environment that enables them to contribute their expertise to the further development of energy solutions and the implementation of our demonstration plants. A key objective is to ensure a high level of employee satisfaction and thus keep staff turnover low.

High compliance standards, transparent management and open communication are essential for a responsible company. Our goal is to establish clear processes for fulfilling our due diligence obligations, to integrate these consistently into our daily work and to communicate them transparently to the relevant stakeholders.

Climate targets

RAG's long-term climate goal includes reducing direct GHG emissions (Scope 1) to net zero by 2040.

Planned projects for hydrogen production and storage not only support RAG's own supply of renewable energy, but also contribute to reducing emissions along the value chain (Scope 3).

The sustainability goals are integrated into the corporate strategy. As part of emissions management, all measures to reduce emissions are systematically recorded, monitored and evaluated.
